The woodwind instruments are perhaps my favorite instrumental group. As a teenager I played both oboe and clarinet; alas, I no longer play these georgeous-sounding instruments. As a young and aspiring composer, however, the experience was invaluable. There's nothing like direct hands on experience.In 1992, a particularly prolific year for me, I conceived the idea of writing a sonata for each of the woodwind instruments which make up the traditional woodwind quintet, each to be accompanied by piano. That year I wrote the three sonatas which appear below before other matters pressed in and derailed the project. Of course, there's still time and I will eventually pick up where I left off. Encouragement is always welcome!
